Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is one of two derivations of hormone therapy for women who have low levels of estrogen and/or progesterone due to age or surgery related to menopause or other health conditions and men who need testosterone replacement therapy. BHRT was developed in the 1930s and synthetic hormone replacement therapy was developed in the 1960s with clinical trials and peak popularity in the 1990s.

The major difference between BHRT and traditional (or synthetic) hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is that synthetic HRT products contain Premarin from the urine of pregnant horses and other synthetic hormones, while BHRT hormones are billed as natural since they are made from plants, especially soy and oestradiol, which is found in the Mexican yam. Because BHRT is composed of processed hormones designed to mimic the hormones produced in the human body, they are no longer natural. Although synthetic hormones are not the same molecular structure as the hormones in the body, the body quickly converts them into a usable form.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) involves plant-derived hormones that have the same chemical structure as the hormones naturally produced by the human body. By replenishing these hormones to an optimal level, BHRT can help restore women’s normal bodily functions. It is distinct from Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which involves products made from the urine of pregnant horses and other non-bioidentical synthetic versions of hormones.

Hormones are essential chemicals that maintain the normal functioning of your body and are involved in every aspect of your health, including metabolism, weight management, sexual performance, mood, and mental sharpness. When your hormones are balanced, you feel physically energized, mentally focused, happy, and attractive. If you’re experiencing hormonal imbalances, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may be the solution you’re looking for.

In additional to optimal feelings of well being, BHRT can provide many additional health benefits.

  • Cancer risk reduction
  • Decreased cardiovascular risk
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Increased lean muscle mass
  • Improves bone density
  • Lowers insulin resistance
  • Improves metabolism
  • Lower cortisol levels
  • Skin tightening/Youthful appearance
  • Mental clarity and improved cognition

Menopausal symptoms can manifest in some women as early as their mid-thirties and continue for almost a decade until menopause sets in. While the average age of menopause is 51, it varies among individuals. Hormonal changes during menopause can significantly affect our appearance and well-being, frequently causing disruptions to our daily lives. Fortunately, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) offers a solution that can help alleviate these symptoms and restore your quality of life.

There are 2 Forms of BHRT

There are two forms of BHRT. The first form is premade by the pharmaceutical companies, many of which are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The other form is custom made (compounded) by a pharmacist based on a prescription from a healthcare provider. Compounded forms contain additional hormones that have not been tested and are therefore not FDA approved.

Bioidentical hormones are not recommended for people with the following health conditions:
  • Blood clotting disorders.
  • Heart or cardiovascular disease.
  • Breast cancer.
  • Stroke.

Like any FDA approved drug, the premade bioidentical hormone drugs have side effects that need to be weighed against the benefits:

  • Weight gain.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Tiredness.
  • Acne.
  • Increased facial hair.
  • Headaches.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Spotting.
  • Cramping.
  • Bloating.
  • Mood Swings.

Side effects are most common after the first dose because the body is not used to the new, higher level. Because the compounded products have not been tested, the side effects of these drugs are not known, as compounding pharmacies do not have to report side effects to the FDA. Compounded drugs can also vary in consistency of ingredient proportions from batch to batch and pharmacy to pharmacy.

Both synthetic and bioidentical hormone treatments are made in the lab and can be delivered as pills, skin patches, gels, creams, rings, sprays, injections, or pellets, depending on if you are receiving estrogen or testosterone. The best delivery method for you will depend on which one is most convenient for your lifestyle. Each method has its own side effects.

It is important if you decide that BHRT therapy is right for you, to shop for a hormone health specialist with additional training in hormonal health like those at New You Wellness. Our practitioners will spend extra time with you, go over all the options, and do numerous blood, saliva, and urine tests. It is important to let your practitioner know if you are pregnant or are taking any other medications that may intensify or reduce the effectiveness of the hormone therapy or have other adverse reactions. We will start with the lowest dose possible and check your hormone levels regularly to make sure your hormones remain balanced and do not swing in the other direction. Once levels are in the correct range, we will stop the hormone therapy to reduce the risk of side effects.
